Colijnsplaat: A maritime gem on Noord-Beveland

Located on the northern coast of the island of Noord-Beveland, Colijnsplaat (locally known as Colijn) is a hidden gem that perfectly balances its maritime history with a modern, relaxed charm. It is a place where you can truly get away from it all and enjoy a peaceful holiday.

History

Colijnsplaat is a village that refused to disappear. While many nearby settlements were lost to the sea over the centuries, Colijn survived – especially during the North Sea flood of 1953. Local men held the sliding gates of the lock in their hands to prevent the village from drowning, a brave act that is now honored by the monument "Houen jongens" (Hold on, boys).

Historically, it was also a center for the Roman cult of Nehalennia, a goddess of seafarers. In 1970, fishermen accidentally pulled dozens of ancient altars from the sea, leading to the reconstruction of the Nehalennia Temple, which you can visit today near the harbor.

Description and Atmosphere

Walking through Colijnsplaat feels like stepping into a living postcard. The Voorstraat is the heart of the village, a beautiful avenue of trees and historic gabled houses and cozy terraces. It has a "protected village view", which means that its authentic character has been strictly preserved. It is the perfect home away from home for those looking for a picturesque and relaxing stay by the water.
