Tholen: A Hidden Gem in Zeeland

Located in the province of Zeeland (often confused with the Netherlands, but unique in its own right), Tholen is a hidden gem that feels like a quiet island escape. It’s a place where history is etched into the stone and the sea is always just a dike away.

A Glimpse of History

Tholen began its journey in the 13th century as a toll station (toll station) on the Eendracht River – hence its name. It received city rights in 1366 and flourished as a fortified fortress. Today, you can still see its distinctive star-shaped layout from the air, a remnant of the medieval walls and moats designed to keep invaders at bay. The town centre is a “protected cityscape”, meaning it looks much as it did centuries ago.

Description: Your holiday awaits

Walking through Tholen feels like stepping into a living museum. The streets are lined with national monuments, and the atmosphere is gezelligheid (cozy, social charm). You'll see the Grote Kerk, a 14th-century Gothic masterpiece, and the Stadhuis (town hall), which houses the oldest carillon in the Netherlands.

Holiday atmosphere: Pack your wandelschoenen (walking shoes) and enjoy a biertje on a terrace overlooking the harbor as the sun sets over the water.

Typical foods

Zeeland is famous for its "salty" flavors. While in Tholen, try:

Zeeuwse Bolus: A sticky, spiral-shaped pastry coated with dark brown sugar and cinnamon.

Seafood: Fresh mussels (mosselen), oysters (oesters) and Oosterschelde lobster are the local stars.

Boterbabbelaars: Traditional hard caramel candies, often sold in decorative blue tins.

Activities and nature

The nature here is dominated by the Oosterschelde National Park, the largest in the country.

Water sports: Oesterdam is a hotspot for diving, sailing and windsurfing.

Cycling: Follow the Bloemdijken routes (flower dikes) for a scenic ride through polders and past historic windmills like De Hoop.

Nature hikes: Head to Slikken van de Heen or Pluimpot nature reserve for bird watching – keep an eye out for seals relaxing on the sandbanks!

Shops and festivals

Shopping: The city centre offers charming local shops and a weekly market every Tuesday morning where you can buy fresh regional produce. For more "big brand" shopping, locals often jump over the bridge to nearby Bergen op Zoom.

Festivals:

Thoolse Dagen: A traditional event in nearby Oud-Vossemeer with tractor pulls and local festivities.

Havendagen (Harbor Days): While larger in Zierikzee, Tholen celebrates its maritime heritage with boat trips and events focusing on seafood.
