Arcidosso: A Mysterious Gem on the Slopes of Monte Amiata

Arcidosso is one of the most striking "borghi" (villages) in southern Tuscany, nestled on the slopes of Monte Amiata. It is a place where the rugged, mystical energy of the mountain meets the classic, rolling elegance of the Tuscan countryside.

History and Description

Founded around the year 1000, Arcidosso's history is dominated by the Aldobrandeschi family, who built the towering stone fortress that still defines the town's skyline. In the 14th century, the town fell under the control of the Republic of Siena, leaving behind a legacy of refined Renaissance architecture mixed with medieval spirit.

Holiday atmosphere and outdoor luxury

If you are looking for an authentic escape, Arcidosso is a hidden gem. The town is surrounded by dense chestnut forests and olive groves, making it a prime location for luxury villas and secluded stays with private pools. In contrast to the crowded streets of Florence, a holiday here feels like a private retreat. Many travelers choose stone farmhouses with panoramic views, where you can spend your vacation relaxing by the water while looking out over the Maremma hills. It's the perfect balance between "old-fashioned" charm and "slow living" luxury.

Gastronomy: The taste of the mountain

The flavors of Arcidosso are earthy, rich and deeply connected to the mountain.

Castagna del Monte Amiata (IGP): The local chestnut is king. You'll find it in Castagnaccio (a dense cake) or polenta.

Ricciola: A traditional local biscuit with a characteristic spiral shape, flavored with anise.

Maremma Tortelli: Massive pasta pockets filled with ricotta and spinach, usually topped with a rich wild boar ragù.

Acquacotta: A “poor man’s soup” made with bread, onions, tomatoes and a poached egg – pure Tuscan comfort.

Nature and activities

Arcidosso is the gateway to the Monte Amiata Wildlife Park, a stunning nature reserve where you can see deer, chamois and even wolves in a protected environment.

Hiking and cycling: There is a vast network of trails ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs up to the summit of Monte Amiata (1,738 metres).

Merigar West: Surprisingly, Arcidosso is home to one of Europe’s most important Tibetan Buddhist centres. You can visit the “Temple of Great Contemplation” for a moment of zen.

Thermal baths: You are just a short drive from the natural hot springs of Bagni di San Filippo and Saturnia.

Traditions and Festivals

The town comes alive through its traditions, usually centered around fire and food. In October, Castagna in Festa is held, the biggest event of the year. Here, the medieval "cantina" (cellars) open to the public and offer wine, roasted chestnuts and local delicacies. In addition, the town celebrates La Fiaccolata, winter fire rituals rooted in ancient pagan traditions to welcome the solstice.

Why visit Arcidosso?

Arcidosso is for the traveler who wants to skip the tourist traps. It is for the person who wants to rent a private villa, enjoy a glass of Montecucco wine by the pool and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
