Breskens: A maritime gem in Zeeland

Breskens is a refreshing maritime gem tucked away on the southernmost coast of the Netherlands. Whether you want to enjoy the sun, a seaside retreat or immerse yourself in the local culture, this fishing village turned resort offers an authentic slice of Zeeland life.

A brief history

Breskens was founded in 1510 and has always been defined by its relationship with the water. Tragically, much of the historic centre was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944 during the Battle of the Scheldt. After the war, the town was rebuilt with a focus on its thriving fishing industry. In recent decades, while the fishing nets are still being cast, the town has successfully developed into a popular holiday destination known for its modern marina and extensive beaches.

Atmosphere and description

Breskens (or Bresjes, as the locals call it) is a sun-drenched port town where the air smells of salt and fresh fish. It is the perfect place for a staycation or a longer summer holiday. Unlike some crowded resorts, Breskens maintains a down-to-earth and welcoming atmosphere. You can spend your days strolling along the panoramic promenade, watching massive container ships glide towards Antwerp or finding a quiet spot in the dunes to relax.

Gastronomy and local specialties

You can’t visit Breskens without tasting the bounty of the North Sea.
