Stresa, located on the western shore of Lake Maggiore in the Piedmont region, has roots dating back to Roman times, but it gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries when it became a favored retreat of European aristocracy. The town flourished in the Belle Époque era, with the construction of grand villas and luxury hotels such as the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées (frequented by Hemingway). Stresa also hosted the Stresa Conference in 1935, a significant pre-WWII diplomatic meeting.
