South Holland: The beating heart of Holland

South Holland (Zuid-Holland) is the beating heart of Holland. It is a province where 17th-century history meets ultra-modern architecture, and where quiet polders lie right next to Europe's busiest port.

Whether you are planning a dagtocht (day trip) or a longer holiday (vakantie), here is everything you need to know about this vibrant region.

History and description

Historically, South Holland was part of the County of Holland. It became its own province in 1840, when the original Netherlands was divided in two. Today, it is the most populous province in the country. It is defined by its relationship with water - much of the land is reclaimed "polder" land, kept dry by a massive network of dikes and pumps.

The “atmosphere” of South Holland is a mix of gezelligheid (the untranslatable Dutch word for cozy, social gatherings) and hard work. You have The Hague, the elegant seat of government; Rotterdam, the rugged, architectural “Manhattan on the Maas”; and Delft, a postcard-perfect canal town.

Typical foods

You can’t visit the city without trying the local specialties. If you’re at a market, look for:

Stroopwafels: Two thin waffles connected by caramel syrup. They originate from Gouda.

Gouda cheese: Visit the city of Gouda to try the real “farmhouse” versions (Boerenkaas).

Haring (Herring): Eaten raw with onions. The best place is Scheveningen, the coastal district of The Hague.

Kibbeling: Deep-fried pieces of white fish served with garlic or remoulade sauce.

Hutspot: A traditional winter mash of potatoes, carrots and onions, famously eaten during the "Relief of Leiden".

Activities & Nature

South Holland is an active holiday paradise.

Kinderdijk: A UNESCO World Heritage Site with 19 historic windmills in a row. It's best explored by bike or boat.

Keukenhof: If you're visiting in spring (March-May), these world-famous flower gardens in Lisse are a must-see.

Dunes and Beaches: The coastline at Noordwijk and Katwijk features massive sand dunes and wide beaches, perfect for a Strandwandeling (beach walk).

Biesbosch: A national park on the southern border that's a maze of rivers and streams - ideal for renting a "whisper boat".

Shops and Festivals

Shopping: For big brands, head to Koopgoot in Rotterdam. For shops and antiques, the "hofjes" (courtyards) of Leiden and the old streets of Delft are perfect.

Festivals:

King's Day (April 27): The King's birthday, when the entire province turns orange.

North Sea Jazz Festival (July): One of the world's largest jazz events, held in Rotterdam.

Leidens Ontzet (October 3): A massive city-wide celebration in Leiden, celebrating the end of the Spanish siege in 1574.
