Flevoland: A Province Made by People
Flevoland is the ultimate testament to Dutch ingenuity—a province literally "made" by the people. As the youngest province in the Netherlands (officially established in 1986), it was reclaimed from the Zuiderzee to create a getaway for the expanding population and to provide fertile agricultural land.
Whether you’re looking for a summer break, a weekend trip, or a unique sightseeing adventure, Flevoland offers a landscape where modern architecture meets wild, untouched nature.
History: The Land from the Sea
Flevoland didn’t exist 100 years ago. After a devastating flood in 1916, the Dutch decided to tame the "Southern Sea" (Zuiderzee) by building the Afsluitdijk, turning the sea into a freshwater lake (the IJsselmeer).
Polders: Engineers pumped out water to create "polders"—new land that sits about 4 meters below sea level.
Archaeology: Ironically, draining the sea revealed over 450 shipwrecks, making it one of the largest "ship graveyards" on land.
Heritage: You can visit Schokland, a former island and UNESCO World Heritage site, to see how people lived when they were still surrounded by water.
Typical Foods: Polder to Table
Because the soil is mineral-rich and fertile, Flevoland is the "vegetable garden" of the Netherlands.
Schokkermop: A traditional local biscuit made with rye, wheat flour, and warm speculaas spices.
Urk Seafood: Head to the former island of Urk for the best Kibbeling (fried Atlantic cod) or fresh smoked eel.
Farm-Fresh Produce: The region is famous for its "White Gold" (asparagus) in spring, as well as high-quality onions, potatoes, and apples.
Local Brews: Try a craft beer from Brouwerij Praght in Lelystad, which uses local ingredients.
Nature & Activities
Flevoland is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Oostvaardersplassen: A world-renowned nature reserve. It’s a "New Wilderness" where you can spot red deer, Konik horses, and even sea eagles.
