Hyrynsalmi: The Heart of Kainuu

Located in the heart of the Kainuu region, Hyrynsalmi is a tranquil Finnish municipality known for its rugged wilderness, quirky world-class events and the "heroic" spirit of its people. Whether you're looking for a holiday home rental or a winter getaway, Hyrynsalmi offers an authentic slice of the Finnish north.

Nature and description

Hyrynsalmi is defined by its dramatic topography, with the highest hills in the Kainuu region and a landscape shaped by the Ice Age. It's the southernmost point of the reindeer range in Finland, meaning you might spot these iconic animals wandering around near roads or forests.

The town is located between Lakes Hyrynjärvi and Salmijärvi, offering a picturesque setting for a lakeside holiday. The air is some of the cleanest in the world, and the "right of way" allows you to search for wild cloudberries and lingonberries in the vast marshlands.

History

The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, but the modern parish was founded in 1786. Hyrynsalmi is famous as the home of the "Hunger Resistance" (Nälkämaan laulu), a testament to the resilience of the locals who survived harsh climates and thin soil. During World War II, the region experienced significant conflict; the German-built "Field Railway" (Kenttärata) once ran through here, and the town's history is deeply marked by the post-war reconstruction period.

Festivals: Swamp Football and More

Hyrynsalmi is the birthplace of swamp football (Suopotkupallo). Every July, the Vuorisuo bog is transformed into a global arena for the Swamp Soccer World Cup, attracting thousands of players and spectators for a muddy, festive competition.

Sumprock: The musical accompaniment to the football tournament, featuring Finnish artists and outdoor parties.

Snow football: The winter equivalent, played in the deep snow of Ukkohalla every January or February.

Activities and sports

Ukkohalla Resort: A major ski resort with 15 slopes, a snow park and a high-quality sauna area. In summer, it hosts the world's northernmost cable wakeboard park.

Hiking: The Vorlokki area offers old, primeval forests and a dramatic 500-meter-long gorge. The Komulanköngäs double waterfall is a must-see for photographers.

Fishing and hunting: The area is a prime location for fishing holidays, with crystal-clear lakes and rivers stocked with trout and perch.

Typical foods

The local cuisine is "Kainuu style" - simple, hearty and from the forest.

Rönnttönen: A small, open rye bread pie filled with sweetened lingonberries and potatoes (it has protected EU status!).

Leipäjuusto: Often called "Finnish squeaky cheese", traditionally served with cloudberry jam.

Sautéed reindeer (Poronkäristys): Served with mashed potatoes and tart lingonberries.

Kukko: Fish or meat baked in a thick rye bread.

Shops and services

Although it is a quiet municipality, the village center offers essential holiday amenities:

Grocery stores: S-Market and K-Market for your daily needs

Local crafts: Look for shops selling handmade Puukko knives or wool knitwear

Ukkohalla shop: Great for outdoor equipment, ski rentals and souvenirs
