Enter Southern Finland (Southwest Finland)

Enter Southern Finland (Southwest Finland), the historic gateway to the Nordics. As the oldest region in the country, it offers a seamless blend of medieval heritage and the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest archipelago. Whether you’re looking for a family holiday, a romantic getaway or a summer vacation, this region is the ultimate tourist destination for those seeking authentic Nordic culture and sustainable travel.

History

This region, known as “Swedish Finland”, is where the Finnish identity was born. Turku, the regional capital, served as Finland’s first capital and is still its oldest city. From the 13th century, under Swedish rule, it was the country’s administrative and religious centre. You can still feel the weight of centuries at Turku Castle (built in 1280) and Turku Cathedral, which stand as a monument to the region’s medieval past.

The landscape is defined by the Turku Archipelago, a sparkling labyrinth of over 20,000 islands.

National Parks: Teijo National Park offers various hiking trails through forests and bogs, while the Archipelago National Park is a paradise for kayakers and birdwatchers.
