Welcome to Pichl bei Schladming

Welcome to Pichl bei Schladming, a charming alpine jewel tucked away in the Enns Valley in Styria, Austria. Whether you're looking for a fast-paced ski trip or a quiet summer holiday, Pichl offers the perfect blend of rustic tradition and modern mountain luxury.

History & Description

The name "Pichl" comes from the dialect word for a small hill or knoll, which perfectly describes its scenic location overlooking the Enns River. Historically a quiet farming community, Pichl developed into a leading tourist hub thanks to its location at the foot of the Reiteralm, one of the four main peaks of Schladming's "4-mountain ski area".

Today, the village is a dream for travelers looking for a homely atmosphere. You'll find a variety of luxury villas with panoramic windows, cozy alpine chalets, and family-run apartments offering ski-in/ski-out convenience. Many of these accommodations feature traditional wood-heavy architecture (like Zirbenholz) along with modern amenities like private saunas and heated boot rooms, making it a prime destination for a self-catering holiday.

Typical Foods

Styrian cuisine is hearty, honest, and deeply connected to the land. When dining at a local Gasthof or mountain hut, look for:

Ennstaler Steirerkas: A spicy, crumbly grey cheese native to the region, often served on buttered rye bread or crumbled over Kasnocken (cheese buns).

Kürbiskernöl: Known as “Green Gold,” this nutty Styrian pumpkin seed oil is drizzled over everything from salads to vanilla ice cream.

Käferbohnensalat: A traditional salad made with large runner beans, onions, and pumpkin seed oil.

Bauernkrapfen: Large, fluffy fried dough rings, served sweet with jam or savory with sauerkraut.

Nature & Activities

Pichl is a natural playground defined by the dramatic limestone peaks of the Dachstein massif to the north and the rolling green (or white) hills of the Schladminger Tauern to the south.

Winter: It’s all about the Reiteralm. Known as the “World’s Best Training Mountain,” it offers crisp, wide slopes. Off the slopes, you can enjoy tobogganing, winter hiking, and snowshoeing through quiet pine forests.

Summer: The Spiegelsee on the Reiteralm is world-famous for reflecting the Dachstein glacier in its still water. The region is a mecca for mountain biking, via ferrata climbing, and swimming in the crystal-clear Pichlsee.

Sommercard: Most apartments and villas include this guest card, which gives you free access to cable cars, swimming pools, and buses.

Festivals and Events

Life in Pichl is celebrated through music and tradition:

Central Europe (July): One of the largest international brass music festivals takes place in nearby Schladming, with parades and concerts often spilling over into the surrounding villages.

Almrauschfest (June): A celebration of the alpine rose blooming on the Reiteralm, with folk music and regional delicacies in the mountain huts.

Almabtrieb (September): A colorful autumn tradition where cattle are decorated with flowers and bells and led down from the high pastures to the valley.

The Night Run: While held in Schladming, the energy of this world-famous night slalom (January) electrifies the entire area, including Pichl.
