Wörthersee is the crown jewel of Carinthia in Austria – a stunning, turquoise-blue alpine lake that feels more like the Mediterranean than the heart of the Alps. Known for its vibrant lifestyle, architectural elegance and crystal-clear waters, it is the ultimate destination for a luxurious summer holiday.

History and Architecture

Wörthersee’s “golden age” began in the late 19th century with the arrival of the Southern Railway, which transformed it into the premier resort of the Viennese aristocracy. This era gave birth to the famous Wörthersee architecture (Wörthersee-Architektur), characterized by romantic villas with turrets, ornate wooden balconies and large loggias. Today, many of these historic villas have been preserved as luxury boutique hotels or private residences, preserving the lake’s prestigious atmosphere.

Description and accommodation

The lake stretches 16.5 km from the provincial capital Klagenfurt in the east to the glamorous resort town of Velden in the west.

The atmosphere: It's a mix of "see and be seen" glamour in Velden and quiet, family-friendly relaxation in Pörtschach or Maria Wörth.

Accommodation: Visitors can choose between staying in a majestic lakeside villa, a modern penthouse with a private jetty or a cozy holiday home nestled in the hills. Many apartments offer breathtaking views of the turquoise water and provide a "home away from home" feeling for long-term holidaymakers.

Nature and geography

The water is famous for its striking colour, caused by finely distributed lime crystals that reflect light. Because it is fed by underground springs and has a mild, sub-Mediterranean climate, the water temperature can reach a balmy 25°C in summer. The surrounding landscape is a lush mix of rolling green hills and the jagged peaks of the Karawanken Mountains to the south.

Activities

Water sports

Water skiing, wakeboarding and sailing are regular features here. You can also rent an electric boat and sail past the famous villas.

Hiking and cycling tours

The Wörthersee Rundwanderweg is a 55 km long route with panoramic views.

Sightseeing

Visit Pyramidenkogel, the world's highest wooden observation tower, or the picturesque Maria Wörth peninsula with its iconic "Wedding Church".

Typical foods (Carinthian specialties)

The cuisine is a fusion of Alpine traditions and Adriatic influences (Alpine-Adriatic cuisine).

Kärntner Kasnudeln: Large pasta pockets filled with quark, potatoes and herbs (mint/chervil), topped with melted butter.

Wörthersee Reinanke: Freshly caught whitefish from the lake, usually grilled or pan-fried.

Reindling: A traditional yeast cake filled with cinnamon, sugar and raisins, often served at Easter or at local festivals.

Brettljause: A wooden platter with smoked bacon, local cheeses and cold cuts, perfect after a long hike.

Festivals and events

Wörthersee is a hotspot for events all year round:

Fête Blanche: A glamorous summer party where everyone dresses in white.

Starnacht am Wörthersee: A major televised music event with European pop and schlager stars.

GTI Meet (Wörtherseetreffen): Historically one of the world's largest Volkswagen car meetings (although now developing into more sustainable formats).
