History

Imst has a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age, but it really began to flourish in the Middle Ages.

The mining boom of the 15th and 16th centuries made Imst an important centre for silver and lead mining.

In the 18th century, Imst became famous throughout Europe for the breeding and sale of singing canaries. Local traders travelled as far as England and Russia to sell these prized birds.

Today, Imst celebrates its industrial and cultural past and preserves its classic Tyrolean architecture, while the town has become a world-class hub for outdoor sports.

Typical foods

Tyrolean food is hearty, filling and designed to feed hungry hikers and skiers. When dining in a rustic mountain hut, try classics like Tiroler Gröstl, Kasspatzln (cheese spätzle), Schlutzkrapfen, Speckknödel and the sweet dessert Kaiserschmarrn.

Dishes often consist of potatoes, mountain cheese, bacon, homemade dumplings and butter-based sauces, reflecting the area's Alpine traditions and rural cuisine.

Activities

Imst is an absolute playground for thrill seekers and families alike.

The Alpine Coaster Hoch-Imst is the world's longest alpine roller coaster and stretches for 3.5 kilometres with sharp turns and fast descents.

The town is also an international centre for sport climbing, with the Kletterzentrum Imst and many natural via ferrata routes.

The nearby Imster Schlucht on the Inn River is one of Europe's most popular white water rafting and canyoning spots.

In winter, the Hoch-Imst ski resort offers skiing, snowboarding and night tobogganing in a family-friendly setting.
