Sankt Martin am Tennengebirge: A gem in the Lammertal

Located in the heart of the Lammertal valley at an altitude of around 1,000 meters, Sankt Martin am Tennengebirge is a typical Salzburg mountain village. Whether you are looking for an energetic adventure or a quiet retreat in the Alps, this "active village" offers the perfect blend of tradition and natural beauty.

History and origins

The village's roots date back to the 12th century, centered around the parish church of St. Martin. This Gothic landmark, rebuilt in the 15th century, still stands as the heart of the local community. The town, named after Martin of Tours, has transformed itself from a remote farming town into a leading destination for Alpine tourism, all the while retaining its rustic "village-next-door" charm.

Nature and landscape

Surrounded by the dramatic limestone peaks of the Tennengebirge and the Dachstein massif, the landscape is breathtaking. Special highlights include the Lammertal Virgin Forest, home to some of the tallest trees in Austria, as well as the Gerzkopf High Moors, a protected nature reserve with panoramic views and unique flora. In the center of town you will find the Seepark, a crystal-clear biological swimming lake, perfect for cooling off in summer.

Activities all year round

Winter: The village is a snow-sure paradise. You will find a family-friendly ski area right in town with easy access to the vast Dachstein West and Ski Amadé regions. Other highlights include 130 km of cross-country ski trails, snow tubing and romantic horse-drawn sleigh rides.

Summer: It is a "wandering village" (Wanderdorf) with countless marked trails. Adrenaline seekers can try the Woody-Bob (a forest slide), mountain biking or tandem paragliding.

Gastronomy and local specialties

The region is a paradise for those seeking "Genuss" (pleasure). Here you can taste Tennengauer Almkäse, an award-winning mountain cheese made from organic hay milk, or Kaspressknödel, flat, pressed cheese dumplings served in a tasty broth. Also try a classic Bauernschmaus with roast pork and sausages, or finish with a Moosbeermuas, a traditional dessert made with wild blueberries from the mountain slopes.

Cultural festivals

Every September you can experience the HeuART-Fest, the world's largest hay art festival, where massive hay sculptures are paraded through the streets. In addition, the Almsommer (Alpine Summer), a series of events marking the migration of livestock to mountain pastures with folk music and traditional folk costumes, is celebrated.
