Klopeiner See: A sunny gem in Carinthia

Located in the sunny south of Carinthia, Klopeiner See is a gem in the Austrian Alps. It is renowned as one of the warmest alpine lakes in Europe, with surface temperatures often reaching a balmy 28°C in summer. Whether you are looking for a relaxing family holiday or an active nature paradise, here is everything you need to know about this turquoise paradise.

History and origins

The history of Klopeiner See is rooted in its transition from a quiet rural landscape to a leading health and wellness destination.

Glacial beginnings: The lake was formed during the last ice age, when the Drau glacier retreated.

The healing era: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the lake became a "Sommerfrische" (summer retreat) for the nobility and upper class, who valued the "silky" water for its purity and supposed healing properties.

Modern tourism: Today, the municipality of St. Kanzian has retained its charm while modernizing, ensuring that the lake remains accessible but untouched.

Description and accommodation

The lake is characterized by its crystal-clear, drinking-quality water and a vibrant pedestrian zone surrounding it - the only one of its kind in Austria.

When planning your stay, you will find a selection of high-quality options. Many visitors choose luxury villas with private access to the lake or modern apartments located directly on the promenade. If you prefer a more independent stay, there are numerous holiday homes and holiday homes offering "self-catering" facilities, perfect for families. These villas often have spacious terraces and panoramic views, while aparthotels combine the privacy of an apartment with the facilities of a hotel.

Typical dishes: Carinthian Alpe-Adriatic cuisine

The food here is a delicious fusion of Austrian heartiness and Mediterranean influences from nearby Italy and Slovenia.

Kärntner Kasnudeln: The crown jewel of the region. These are hand-knotted pasta dishes filled with quark, potatoes and fresh herbs (usually mint and chervil), served with browned butter.

Jauntal Salami: A protected local speciality. This air-dried salami is a must-have on any Brettljause (a traditional snack dish with ham, cheese and pickled cucumbers).

Reindling: A yeast cake filled with cinnamon, sugar and raisins - traditionally eaten at Easter, but available all year round.

Fresh lake fish: Look for Kärntner Lax’n (lake trout) or Arctic char, typically caught fresh and grilled with herbs.

Activities for every taste

Lake Klopeiner is a paradise for "active connoisseurs".

Water sports: Swimming, stand-up paddling (SUP) and diving are the main attractions due to the warm water.

Cycling: There are over 1,200 km of cycle paths, including the famous Flow Country Trail on the Petzen (the longest in Europe).

Hiking: Explore Georgiberg for panoramic views or take a day trip to the Obir Stalactite Caves.

Golf: The Klopeiner See Golf Park offers an 18-hole course with stunning mountain scenery.

Festivals and Events

The region is lively throughout the summer months:

See-Fest (Lake Festival): With live music, food stalls and a massive fireworks display over the water.

Farant-Market: A traditional harvest festival in nearby Globasnitz, where you can buy local crafts and food.

Weekly children's festivals: In July and August, the promenade hosts magicians, clowns and games for the little ones.

Nature around the lake

The lake is surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills. As the lake has no significant natural inflow or outflow, the water remains calm and exceptionally clean.

Turnersee Bird Park: Just 4 km away, it is home to over 300 species of birds.

Völkermarkt Reservoir: A nearby protected wetland area, perfect for birdwatching and leisurely boat trips.

Flora: The surrounding "Jauntal" valley is famous for its Hadn (buckwheat) fields, which turn the landscape beautifully white and pink during the flowering season.
