History and culture in the heart of Tyrol

Uderns has a rich historical tapestry deeply rooted in the Schwaz district of Tyrol. For centuries it developed as a peaceful farming community, sustained by alpine agriculture and its strategic location along the valley floor.

An important cultural landmark is the Steudltenn, a beautifully preserved 13th-century farm barn. Today it has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, hosting avant-garde theatre, art exhibitions and musical performances, keeping the village’s cultural heritage alive while connecting it with modern artistic movements.

Breathtaking nature and unique sunshine hours

Uderns is located at an altitude of 550 meters, uniquely located where the valley is widest, which ensures that it has the longest sunshine hours in the region. The dramatic backdrop is breathtaking: the village is framed by lush, rolling meadows that give way to towering, snow-capped peaks.

The historic railway, the Zillertalbahn, runs right through the village. You can take a nostalgic, century-old steam train to watch the alpine landscape with crystal-clear rivers and dense forests slowly roll past the window.

Year-round activities for the whole family

Regardless of the season of your holiday, Uderns is an outdoor playground that offers adventure and relaxation of absolute world class.

Summer adventures in the fresh mountain air

Uderns is a regional hotspot for golf enthusiasts, with a pristine 65-hectare 18-hole championship course set against a dramatic mountain backdrop. If you’re more of a walker or cyclist, hundreds of kilometres of trails wind through the valley and up the mountain ridges. When your muscles need a break, the Erlebnistherme Zillertal is just 3 km away in the neighbouring town of Fügen. This large spa complex offers warm thermal pools and wellness saunas where you can relax after an active day in the mountains.

Winter sports and snowy slopes

When the snow falls, the area transforms into a true mecca for ski enthusiasts. Although Uderns itself is peaceful and free from the hustle and bustle of mass tourism, the free ski bus takes you to the huge, first-class ski resorts of Hochzillertal-Hochfügen and Spieljoch within minutes. There's also plenty of fun off the slopes: enjoy the illuminated night toboggan runs, romantic ice skating on local rinks or a leisurely winter hike through the beautiful, snow-covered valleys.

Authentic local festivals and traditions

The community pride of Uderns is best experienced through its seasonal festivities, which bring together locals and visitors alike.

Steudltenn Theatre Festival (April - July and November): This famous festival brings the historic 13th-century barn to life with both local and international plays, modern art and live children's theatre.

Almabtrieb (Autumn): A spectacular, colourful tradition where cattle, beautifully decorated with brightly coloured flowers and massive bells, are driven down from the high alpine pastures to the valley. The procession is accompanied by lively brass bands, regional crafts and cosy farmers' markets.

Krampus & Perchten Runs (Winter): Mysterious and energetic winter parades with intricately carved wooden masks and thick fur costumes keep the ancient Alpine folklore alive and exciting for spectators.

Gastronomy: Typical Tyrolean Dishes You Must Try

Tyrolean cuisine is hearty, comforting and designed to nourish and warm mountain adventurers. When dining out at the local inns (Gasthöfe) or cooking in your holiday home, be sure to look out for these fantastic regional specialities:

Zillertaler Krapfen: The valley's absolute signature dish. They are crispy, golden-fried dough pockets filled with a tasty and creamy filling of potatoes, quark and a strong, local grey cheese.

Tiroler Gröstl: An incredibly delicious and filling roast made from spfried potatoes, onions and pieces of pork or beef. The whole thing is seasoned with fresh herbs and topped with a perfectly fried egg.

Kaspressknödel: Flatbread and cheese dumplings made with the strong, traditional Tyrolean Graukäse (grey cheese). They are fried until crispy in the pan and served either on a fresh salad or in a piping hot, clear beef broth.

Kaiserschmarrn: The ultimate sweet treat after a long day in the mountains. A fluffy, thick and lightly grated pancake that is caramelized with sugar and butter in a pan, sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a fresh plum or apple compote.
