Saalbach-Hinterglemm: The beating heart of the Alps

Located in the heart of the Pinzgau region in Salzburgerland, Saalbach-Hinterglemm is one of Austria's premier alpine destinations. Known as the "Home of Lässig" (Home of Relaxation), it strikes the perfect balance between energetic adventure and traditional Austrian charm.

Description and Atmosphere

The region consists of two neighboring villages: Saalbach, which is bustling, social and famous for its legendary après-ski scene, and Hinterglemm, which offers a slightly more relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Architecturally, the valley is a postcard-perfect blend of tradition and modern luxury. You'll find charming wooden chalets and rustic villas tucked away in the mountainside, many of which offer ski-in/ski-out access. For those seeking independence, the area is filled with exclusive holiday apartments and cozy vacation rentals that serve as the perfect base for exploring the "Skicircus."

A glimpse into history

Before the Glemmtal valley became a global tourist hub, it was a quiet farming community. In the 16th and 17th centuries, there were minor attempts at copper mining, but the terrain proved difficult. The real turning point came around 1900, when the first skiers appeared on the slopes. In the mid-20th century, the first lifts were built, transforming a humble mountain village into a world-class resort that will host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships (at the latest by 2025).

Typical Pinzgau food

The culinary scene is all about "Hüttengaudi" (mountain hut fun) and hearty soul food.

Pinzgauer Kasnocken: The local version of cheese spaetzle, served in a steaming iron pan with melted local mountain cheese and crispy onions.

Kaspressknödel: Flat, pressed cheese dumplings, either served in a clear broth or with a side of tangy sauerkraut.

Kaiserschmarrn: A fluffy, grated pancake caramelized with sugar and served with plum compote - the ultimate reward after a hike.

Salzburger Nockerl: A sweet, airy soufflé representing the three snow-capped peaks that surround Salzburg.

Activities: Summer & Winter

Winter: Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn offers over 270 km of continuous slopes. In addition to skiing, you can also enjoy tobogganing, snowshoeing or a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge of the Alps - a 200-meter-long suspension bridge.

Summer: The region is transformed into a mecca for mountain biking. Routes such as the Hacklberg Trail are world-famous. For families, the "Valley of Games" offers themed hiking trails and the Baumzipfelweg (Treetop Trail).

Festivals and Events

BERGFESTival (December): A massive rock and indie festival that kicks off the winter season across various mountain stages.

GlemmRide Bike Festival (July): A celebration of freeride culture with slopestyle competitions, downhill races and live DJs.

Bauernherbst (autumn): A traditional harvest festival where locals celebrate Pinzgauer heritage with folk music, traditional dress (Tracht) and craft markets.

Nature and landscape

The landscape is defined by the Kitzbühel Alps, which are characterised by the "grass mountains" (Grasberge), which provide lush, green, rolling peaks in summer and smooth, wide-open ski slopes in winter. The valley is rich in biodiversity with crystal-clear mountain streams and dense pine forests that remain snow-covered well into spring.
