Lago di Monate is a glacial lake in the Province of Varese, covering about 2.5?km² with a maximum depth of 41?m at an elevation of 266?m

Archaeological finds include pile-dwelling settlements dating back around 3,600?years (transition from Early to Middle Bronze Age), wood canoes and plank boats, Roman votive plaques, and tools — many now in regional museums. The site of Sabbione has even been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list

Historically fishing was a key local activity. From 1652 aristocratic families like the Biglia and later the Borghi oversaw fishing rights. In the 19th century, trout, coregone, and other species were introduced using modern breeding methods. Some invasive species now threaten native fish populations

Description & Nature
Fed by underground springs and minor streams (like Rio Freddo), it drains via the Acquanegra stream into Lake Maggiore

Known as one of Italy’s cleanest lakes (if not the cleanest, excluding high-mountain tarns), with exceptionally clear spring waters and protected shoreline, motorized boats are forbidden
The shore features alternating stretches of reeds, dense woods, and patches of water lilies—providing excellent habitat for birds and aquatic life

Typical Food
While small and local, the area embraces Lombard lake cuisine. Expect dishes like risotto al persico (perch risotto), grilled trout or whitefish, and seasonal cheeses and salami typical of the region

Trattorie and country-style restaurants in villages like Cadrezzate and Travedona-Monate serve local fare. Also, fresh produce like the local peaches (Perzic de Munà) are sold along roadsides in July and August

Activities & Trails
Water-based: Swimming in clean water; paddle-boat and canoe rentals; kayaking; fishing for perch, pike, bass; rowing events by the local Canottieri club

Land-based: Numerous hiking and cycling trails around the lake:

Monte Pelada loop (˜4?km, easy)

Belvedere di Travedona loop (˜6?km, easy)

Longer routes: Mercallo-Osmate (˜15?km, intermediate), Chiesa di Santa Fe (˜15.7?km)

Cycling and gravel/MTB rides across scenic paths connecting nearby lakes and hills through the Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino

Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy bird-watching, photography, or a quiet day with nature by the water’s edge.

Festivals & Culture
Festa di Monate, held around August?5 in honour of the Madonna della Neve, is a major event:

Three-day festivities include a traditional cuccagna sul lago (greasy pole over the water) on Sunday afternoon.

Monday night features spectacular pyro-musical fireworks over the lake

Sporting events, particularly rowing regattas organized by the ASD Canottieri di Monate, are also a highlight in summer
