Pals is a beautiful, well-preserved medieval village in Catalonia, Northern Spain, a few kilometers inland from the Costa Brava.

History and Description
Name Origin: The name "Pals" is thought to derive from the Latin word "Palus," meaning "swampy place" or "marshland," reflecting the area's original geographical state.

Medieval Heritage: The village dates back to at least the 7th century, with the earliest documented evidence of a castle and tower from the year 889.

Key Landmarks:

Torre de les Hores (Tower of the Hours): The only remaining part of the original castle, a Romanesque circular tower built between the 11th and 13th centuries, now featuring a clock.

Gothic Quarter (Barri del Pedró): A meticulously restored area of narrow, cobbled streets, stone houses, and semicircular arches.

Church of Sant Pere: A Gothic-style church built on the remains of an earlier Romanesque one, using stone from the dismantled castle.

Plaça Major: The main square, historically a market area, now home to the Town Hall and Tourist Office.

Josep Pla Viewpoint: Offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Empordà plains, the rice fields, and the distant Medes Islands.

Typical Foods (Gastronomy)
The local cuisine is heavily influenced by its unique agricultural product: Pals Rice.

Arròs de Pals: The star local ingredient, known for its slow ripening process that results in a more consistent grain.

Arròs de Pals a la Cassola: The most traditional and deeply-rooted dish, a brothy rice casserole often made with meat and seafood.

Arròs Negre: Black rice cooked with seafood and squid ink.

Other Catalan Specialties: The regional cuisine of the Costa Brava is prominent:

Suquet de Peix: A hearty Catalan fish stew.

Fideuà: A paella-like dish that uses short noodles (fideus) instead of rice.

Mar i Muntanya: "Sea and mountain" dishes that combine seafood and meat.
