Welcome to Mariapfarr: Austria's sunny heart

Located in the heart of the Salzburger Lungau (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve), Mariapfarr is widely known as the sunniest place in Austria. It is a town where deep-rooted history meets an Alpine landscape that looks as if it has been plucked straight from a postcard.

A touch of history

Mariapfarr is one of the oldest settlements in the region, first documented in the year 923 AD. Its most famous historical claim to fame is its connection to the world's most famous Christmas carol. In 1816, the young assistant priest Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics to "Silent Night! Holy Night!" right here in Mariapfarr. You can still visit the Silent Night Museum and the stunning pilgrimage basilica that serves as the spiritual heart of the town.

The ultimate holiday experience

Mariapfarr is a quintessential "climatic health resort", meaning the air is exceptionally clean. The town centre is charming and within walking distance, making it a favourite for those seeking a peaceful break away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

When planning your stay, you'll find a wide range of accommodation options, from rustic, family-run apartments to modern luxury villas. Many holiday homes feature traditional wooden architecture, south-facing balconies to enjoy the record sunshine, and are close to wellness centres such as the Samsunn Vitality Center. Whether you book a cosy studio or a spacious chalet-style apartment, the hospitality here is world-class.

Typical dishes: A taste of Lungau

The cuisine here is hearty, local and incredibly satisfying. Don't leave without trying:

Lungauer Eachtling: Locally grown potatoes, renowned for their flavour due to the high altitude soil.

Schöpsernes: A traditional roast lamb dish, often served with horseradish and dumplings.

Hasenöhrl: Fried pastry ("rabbit ears"), usually served with sauerkraut.

Murauer beer: A local favorite to wash down a plate of Käsespätzle (cheese noodles).

Festivals and traditions

Samson Parade: A must-see! Mariapfarr is one of the few places that keeps the tradition of the Samson figure alive – a 6.5-meter-tall giant carried by a single man through the streets during summer festivals.

Harvest Festival (Bauernherbst): Held in late summer/autumn, it celebrates the return of livestock from the mountains with music, crafts and plenty of local schnapps.

Activities and nature

Nature is the main attraction here. The landscape ranges from rolling green hills to jagged peaks and offers:

Winter: Although Mariapfarr does not have a massive mountain peak itself, it is centrally located between four major ski areas: Fanningberg, Grosseck-Speiereck, Katschberg and Obertauern. Cross-country skiing and winter hiking are also very popular here.

Summer: The region is a paradise for e-bikers and hikers. With over 60 alpine lakes in the Lungau region, there is always a crystal-clear destination for your hike.

Wellness: The town is home to the wellness oasis Samsunn, perfect for relaxing your muscles after a day on the slopes or trails.
