Ancient roots – The Kvarner Gulf area (between the Istrian Peninsula and the northern Dalmatian coast) has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Illyrian tribes were the first known inhabitants, followed by the Romans who founded settlements like Tarsatica (modern-day Rijeka).

Medieval period – Controlled by various powers: Byzantines, Venetians, Frankopans (a Croatian noble family), Habsburgs, and Hungarians. Islands like Krk, Cres, and Lošinj had semi-autonomous communes under Venice.

Austro-Hungarian era – In the late 19th century, Kvarner developed as a luxury health and holiday destination for European aristocracy. Resorts such as Opatija became famous for their mild climate and grand hotels.

20th century – Changed hands multiple times due to political shifts (Italy, Yugoslavia, and eventually Croatia). Today, it’s a blend of Croatian, Italian, and Central European influences.
