Kötschach-Mauthen: Carinthia's most delicious corner

Located in the breathtaking Gail Valley in Carinthia, Kötschach-Mauthen is often called "Carinthia's most delicious corner". This charming market town lies at the foot of the Carnic Alps and serves as a gateway to Italy via the Plöcken Pass.

History

The history of Kötschach-Mauthen is deeply connected to its strategic location. Mauthen in particular dates back to Roman times, when it served as a station on the road over the Plöcken Pass. In the Middle Ages, the region flourished due to iron and silver mining. Perhaps its most poignant historical chapter took place during the First World War, when the town was located directly on the Alpine front. Today, the 1915-1918 museum serves as a powerful memorial to peace, documenting the mountain wars that took place in the surrounding peaks.

Description and Accommodation

The town is a perfect blend of Alpine tradition and modern well-being. It is an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful holiday, characterised by rolling green meadows in summer and a sparkling snow-covered valley in winter.

For visitors, the area offers a high standard of hospitality. You can find a cosy holiday apartment in the heart of the village, or opt for a spacious holiday villa or chalet with private sauna and mountain views for a more luxurious stay. Many apartments are located in traditional farmhouses that have been renovated into modern holiday homes, providing a rustic yet comfortable base for your adventures. Whether you book a mountain villa or a cosy studio apartment, you will find that the local "Slow Food" philosophy extends to the warm welcome you receive.

Typical foods

As the world's first Slow Food travel destination, the cuisine here is exceptional:

Gailtaler Speck: A high-quality, dried bacon that is a protected regional speciality.

Gailtaler Almkäse: Traditional mountain cheese made on the high pastures.

Kärntner Kasnudeln: Large pasta pockets filled with quark and mint or chervil, drizzled with browned butter.

Schlipfkrapfen: Similar to ravioli, often filled with potatoes and herbs.

Loncium Beer: Award-winning craft beer brewed right in Mauthen.

Summer: Hiking in the Mauthen Gorge, cycling along the Gail River and swimming in the Aquarena or natural swimming pool. The Geo-Trail offers a fascinating insight into 500 million years of Earth's history.

Winter: The Vorhegg family ski area is perfect for beginners, while the huge Nassfeld resort is just a short shuttle ride away. Cross-country skiing and ice climbing are also popular.
