Castellammare del Golfo began as Emporium Segestanorum, the ancient port of Segesta, noted by Ptolemy and Strabo

. Its Arab invaders called it Al Madarig (“the Steps”), a name referring to its steep streets from harbor to castle. The Arabs first built the castle in the 9th century; the Normans later expanded it into a fortification

At the end of the historic harbor stands the Castello Normanno, now housing a museum and topped by a 1901 automated lighthouse that flashes twice every ten seconds in the night sky

The layout of the town slopes down toward Cala Marina, transitioning from narrow alleys up high to bustling cafés and waterfront fish markets below

Cuisine & Specialties
Local dishes blend fishing heritage and regional produce:

Dishes such as busiate al pesto alla Trapanese, “risotto alla marinara” and seafood couscous, reflect centuries-old Arab-Sicilian fusion

Sweets include cassatella di Castellammare, cannoli, and cassata, plus regional sweets layered with ricotta and candied fruit

Explore local food life at the Mercato del Pesce by the harbor and the town’s central produce market—filled with cheeses, olives, fresh vegetables, and baked goods

Shops & Local Crafts
Artisan boutiques along Corso Garibaldi and in narrow lanes sell hand-painted ceramics, jewelry, textiles, leather goods, and Sicilian olive oil and capers—perfect as authentic souvenirs

At the harbor market you’ll also find seafood stalls and vendors selling maritime heritage items and direct-catch fish for cooking or sampling on the spot

Festivals & Cultural Events
Madonna del Soccorso (1–21?August) is the town’s signature festival. The highlight is a stunning 19?Aug sea procession carrying the statue on a decorated boat, followed by a land procession and fireworks across the 19th–21st August days. A fair fills Piazza Petrolo during the celebration

Historical re-enactment of 1718 events: every two years in mid-July, a dramatic sunset show retells when British ships attacked and the town was saved by an apparition of the Madonna, with performances, concerts, and fireworks

Saint Rita Day (19?May): a medieval-style street pageant with knights, flag-wavers, and musicians parading through the old town

San Giuseppe “vampata” (18?March): an agrarian purification fire ritual held in rural zones where villagers gather around bonfires, recite rosaries in dialect, and leap over flames—a centuries-old tradition increasingly held outside paved streets

Other events: Ferragosto (15 August) Catholic procession, Santa Rosalia festival (September), Summer Jazz Festival (July), Sagra del Tonno (fish fair) and PLAS street arts festival (September)
