Experience Lake Ossiach: Carinthia's Emerald Pearl

Located in the heart of Carinthia, Lake Ossiach is Austria's third largest lake and a masterpiece of emerald water framed by the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps. It's a destination where cultural history meets rugged outdoor adventures.

Cultural history and architectural treasures

The lake's history is rooted in Ossiach Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded around 1028. For centuries, it was the region's spiritual and intellectual center. Today, the abbey remains the lake's cultural crown jewel, with its Baroque architecture and late Gothic frescoes serving as a backdrop for world-class musical performances. The region's history is also marked by the strategically important Landskron Castle, a medieval fortress that still towers over the western shore.

Nature and lake characteristics

The lake is approximately 11 km long and reaches a depth of 52 metres. The water is of drinking quality and can reach a pleasant 25°C in summer, making it a "warm" alpine lake.

North shore: Dominated by the Gerlitzen Alpine mountain range, which provides a steep, dramatic rise from the water's edge.

South shore: More wooded and gentle, home to the Ossiacher Tauern ridges and the tranquil "Slow Paths".

Bleistätter Heath: A protected wetland at the eastern end, perfect for birdwatching and peaceful nature walks.

A taste of Carinthia: The local cuisine

Carinthian cuisine is a fusion of Austrian tradition and Mediterranean influence (Alpe-Adriatic style):

Kärntner Kasnudel: Large pasta pockets filled with quark cheese and mint, drizzled with browned butter.

Reinling: A traditional yeast cake filled with cinnamon, sugar and raisins.

Fresh lake fish: Specifically Seeforelle (lake trout) and Reinanke, often served pan-fried on lakeside terraces.

Brettljause: A rustic wooden platter with local mountain cheeses, smoked ham (Speck) and farmhouse bread.

Activities and festivals all year round

Whether you're looking for adrenaline or quiet contemplation, the lake offers a varied itinerary:

Active sports: Paragliding from the Gerlitzen peak, sailing, stand-up paddling (SUP) and cycling on the 29 km lake loop.

Gerlitzen Alpe: Accessible via the Kanzelbahn cable car for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.

Carinthian Summer Music Festival: An internationally renowned festival held every July and August featuring opera, orchestral works and jazz within the monastery walls.

European Bike Week: Near Lake Faak (but with a stretch spanning the entire length of Ossiach), this is one of the world's largest Harley-Davidson gatherings every September.
