Ancient roots – The area was inhabited since prehistoric times, with traces of Illyrian and Roman settlements.
Medieval era – The name Višnjan appears in documents from the 11th century. The old town was once surrounded by defensive walls, parts of which still remain.
Venetian period – Like much of Istria, Višnjan was under the Venetian Republic from the 13th to the 18th century, leaving its mark in architecture and town planning.
Modern times – Today it’s a peaceful municipality famous for its Observatory and rural tourism.
