Porto Santo, often called the "Golden Island" (Ilha Dourada), is the smaller inhabited island of the Madeira archipelago. Located about 43 km northeast of Madeira, it offers a starkly different, more arid landscape famous for its therapeutic sands and serene atmosphere.

History & Description
Discovery: Discovered in 1418 by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, it was the first Portuguese maritime discovery of the 15th century. It served as a strategic point for further Atlantic exploration.

The Columbus Connection: Christopher Columbus lived on the island for several years after marrying Filipa Moniz, the daughter of the first captain-donee of Porto Santo.

Landscape: Unlike the lush, green mountains of Madeira, Porto Santo is characterized by low hills, volcanic peaks, and a famous 9 km stretch of soft, golden sand. The island has a warm, dry Mediterranean climate.

Nature & Activities
The Beach: The main attraction is the long sandy beach, whose sands are scientifically proven to have medicinal properties for treating bone and joint ailments.

Geology:

Pico Ana Ferreira: Features a spectacular wall of prismatic basalt columns known as the "Piano" or "Organ."

Porto das Salemas: Natural rock pools visible only at low tide.

Dunes: A "mini-desert" area with fascinating sediment formations and fossils.

Hiking: * Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã (PR1): The most popular hike, offering 360-degree views of the island.

Pico do Castelo: Offers a fortress-like viewpoint once used to spot pirate raids.

Sea Sports: The island is a premier destination for diving (with several shipwrecks), kayaking to the Cal Islet, windsurfing, and whale watching.

Typical Foods & Drink
Bolo do Caco: Porto Santo is the traditional home of this flat circular bread made with sweet potato flour, typically served warm with garlic butter and parsley.

Fresh Seafood: Try Espada (Black Scabbard fish) often served with banana, Gaiado (sun-dried skipjack tuna), and Fragateira (a rich fish stew).

Espetada: Beef cubes grilled on laurel skewers, a staple of the archipelago.

Porto Santo Wine: The island produces unique wines from grapes grown in the sandy soil, often used as aperitifs.

Lambeca: A legendary local artisanal ice cream found in the center of Vila Baleira.

Festivals & Events
Columbus Festival (September): The biggest event of the year, featuring 16th-century markets, music, and a theatrical recreation of Christopher Columbus landing on the island.

Festas de São João (June 23-24): Celebrates the island's patron saint with colorful marches, folk dances, and street parties.

Wine Festival (August): Celebrates the grape harvest with public grape stomping and tastings.

Nossa Senhora da Graça (August 14-15): A religious pilgrimage and festival with traditional music and food.

Shopping & Shops
Vila Baleira: Most shops are concentrated in the capital's center, especially along Rua João Gonçalves Zarco.

Centro de Artesanato: Located near the pier, this is the best place for traditional crafts like palm leaf dolls, decorative clay figurines, and embroidery.

Local Specialties: Look for Bolo de Mel (honey cake) and local wine.

Zarco Shopping: A small shopping mall in the city center for daily necessities and fashion.
