Experience De Haan – Belgian coastal idyll with Belle Époque charm

Stepping into De Haan feels like traveling back to the romantic Belle Époque period. While many other Belgian coastal towns were dominated by modern concrete construction in the mid-20th century, De Haan has retained its historical identity and authentic atmosphere. The city is known as the idyllic “garden city by the sea”, where green avenues, elegant villas and rolling dunes create a very special atmosphere by the North Sea.

The history behind De Haan’s unique architecture

De Haan’s characteristic expression is due to a visionary urban planning from 1889. Here, the Belgian government granted a special land concession to private investors with one crucial requirement: all buildings had to be low-rise villas surrounded by green gardens. This strategy was designed by the famous urban planner Joseph Stübben, who created winding streets and a harmonious neighborhood inspired by Anglo-Norman architecture.

The result is a coastal town with a rare elegance and tranquility, where nature and architecture merge. De Haan quickly became popular with Europe's upper class, and even Albert Einstein stayed in the town in 1933 after his escape from Nazi Germany.

Your next relaxing holiday by the North Sea

If you dream of a peaceful holiday by the sea, De Haan is an obvious choice. Here you will not find tall concrete buildings or hectic tourist areas. Instead, you will find quiet streets, green areas and historic villas with lots of charm.

Holiday villas and apartments with a view

A large part of the experience in De Haan is about finding the perfect place to stay. The town offers a wide selection of beautiful holiday villas with red tiled roofs, small towers and classic wooden balconies, which exude old-fashioned European elegance.

If you prefer modern comfort, there are also stylish apartments close to the Zeedijk promenade with fantastic panoramic views of the sea. Here you can start the day with coffee on the terrace while enjoying the view of the dunes and the fresh sea air.

Food experiences and local specialties

De Haan is a paradise for anyone who loves fresh fish and seafood. The city's restaurants serve classic Belgian dishes with a focus on local ingredients from the North Sea.

Shrimp croquettes and fresh mussels

One of the most popular specialties is the famous Belgian shrimp croquettes, also called Garnaalkroketten. They consist of crispy, golden croquettes filled with creamy béchamel sauce and small sweet gray shrimps from the North Sea.

Fresh mussels are also a must. They are often served steamed in white wine with celery and onions and crispy Belgian fries on the side.

Belgian waffles and homemade ice cream

After a day at the beach, there are few things better than a fresh Belgian waffle or a handmade ice cream along the promenade. The sweet specialties are an important part of the cozy coastal atmosphere in De Haan.

Activities and experiences in De Haan

The city offers a wealth of activities for families, couples and nature lovers alike.

La Potinière – the heart of the green oasis

In the middle of the city you will find the historic park La Potinière, which is a popular gathering place with tennis courts, mini golf and cozy cafes. The park is perfect for relaxing after a day at the beach.

Trammelant – Belle Époque returns

Every year at the beginning of August, the entire city is transformed during the Trammelant festival. The streets are filled with people dressed in historical costumes, old steam trams and large markets that recreate the atmosphere of the early 1900s.
