History
Brandenburg's history is deeply intertwined with the rise of the Prussian state. Originally inhabited by Slavic tribes, the region was established as the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1157 by Albert the Bear. In 1415, the Hohenzollern dynasty took control, paving the way for Brandenburg to become the powerhouse of the Kingdom of Prussia. After World War II and the subsequent division of Germany, Brandenburg became part of East Germany (GDR) until its historic reunification in 1990. Today, it stands as a culturally rich federal state that completely surrounds Germany's capital, Berlin.
