Often called the “Gateway to the Sorrento Peninsula,” Vico Equense is the perfect middle ground between the bustling energy of Naples and the refined glamour of Sorrento. Dramatically perched on a tuff cliff, it offers panoramic views that will have you reaching for your camera every five minutes.

A glimpse into the past

Vico Equense has been a sought-after destination since ancient times. Originally inhabited by the Oscans and later the Romans, it served as a peaceful retreat for the Roman nobility (as it does for travelers today).

The town’s name comes from the Latin Vicus Aequensis. After facing destruction during the fall of the Roman Empire, it was rebuilt in the 13th century by Charles II of Anjou. This era gave the town its most iconic landmark: the Church of the Annunziata, the only Gothic cathedral on the coast, built right on the edge of a steep cliff.

The vibe: Your Mediterranean getaway

Vico Equense is the “insider’s” choice for an authentic Italian vacation. While neighboring towns can feel like tourist hubs, Vico has retained its local spirit.

Imagine waking up in a luxury villa tucked away in the hills of Arola or Seiano. Many of these properties are restored farmhouses that combine rustic charm with modern indulgence, often with a private pool overlooking the Bay of Naples. It’s the ultimate vacation destination: the scent of lemon groves in the air, a cool dip in your infinity pool, and Vesuvius looming majestically on the horizon.

Nature and outdoor activities

The geography here is a dramatic blend of mountains and sea.

Explore Monte Faito

Take the funivia (funivia) from the train station to the top. It's literally a breath of fresh air with hiking trails through beech forests.

Beaches and coves

Head down to Marina di Vico or the picturesque port of Marina di Seiano for a day of sunbathing and crystal-clear water.

Hiking in the mountains

Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods): Although Vico technically starts a little further down the coast, it's a good base for hikers who want to venture into the Lattari Mountains.

The taste of Vico

Vico Equense is a big hit on the Italian culinary scene. It's the birthplace of Pizza a Metro (Pizza per Meter) - created by Luigi Dell'Amura - where you order your pizza based on length rather than a round pie.

Don't leave without trying:

Provolone del Monaco DOP: A unique, semi-hard, piquant cheese made from the milk of Agerolese cows.

Ravioli alla Caprese: Pasta filled with local caciotta cheese and marjoram.

Walnut liqueur (Nocillo): A dark, spicy digestive made from local green walnuts.

Festivals and Traditions

Festa di San Ciro (January 31): The city honors its patron saint with a massive procession and live fireworks.

Pizza a Vico (Spring): An annual festival celebrating the city's pizza tradition, where the streets turn into an open-air pizzeria.

Social World Film Festival: An international film event that brings a touch of Hollywood sparkle to the city's historic squares.
