Roses is a prominent coastal town in the Alt Empordà region of Catalonia, Spain, located on the northern end of the beautiful Bay of Roses on the Costa Brava.

History and Description
Origin: Roses owes its origins to the Greek colony of Rhode, founded potentially by colonists from Rhodes or Massalia (Marseilles) around the 5th century BC. Remains of the Greek settlement are visible today.

Historical Significance: It was an important port during the Middle Ages and was fortified over the centuries to defend against invaders and pirates. The town's historic core includes the imposing Ciutadella de Roses, a 16th-century Renaissance fortress that encloses archaeological remains from Greek, Roman, Visigothic, and medieval periods.

Modern Town: Today, Roses is a major fishing port on the Costa Brava and a very popular tourist centre. It's known for its long, wide sandy beaches, lively atmosphere, and proximity to stunning natural parks. It is the only major resort on the Costa Brava to face west, offering spectacular sunsets over the Bay of Roses.

Typical Foods
Roses has a rich gastronomic tradition linked to its fishing port.

Fresh Seafood: The primary product is fresh fish and seafood from the local fishing fleet. Look for local catches like prawns, anchovies, monkfish, and hake.

Suquet de Peix de Roses: A traditional fishermen's stew made with freshly caught fish and potatoes. It's a signature local dish.

Local Produce: The cuisine uses local products with the "Gastronomy of Origin" quality seal, including fresh fish, PDO Empordà olive oils, and DO Empordà wines.

Sweets & Drinks: Specialties include buñuelos (fritters) and rocs from Montjoi. A traditional local drink to try is cremat, a rum-based beverage often prepared with cinnamon, lime, and coffee.

El Bulli: Roses was famously home to the world-renowned El Bulli restaurant, led by chef Ferran Adrià, located in Cala Montjoi until its closure in 2011 (now an exhibition lab).

Nature and Activities
Roses is surrounded by natural beauty, making it a hub for outdoor enthusiasts.

Nature
Natural Parks: Roses sits between two major natural parks:

Cap de Creus Natural Park: The easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, known for its dramatic, wind-sculpted cliffs, unique rock formations, and beautiful, secluded coves (like Cala Montjoi, Cala Jóncols). It's a marine-terrestrial park with rich biodiversity.

Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park: A vast wetlands area and an important bird sanctuary, ideal for birdwatching and gentle walks.

Bay of Roses: Recognized as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, it offers extensive sandy beaches in the town centre and more secluded coves along the Cap de Creus coastline.

Megalithic Route: The area features an important megalithic heritage, with dolmens and menhirs, such as the Dolmen "Creu d'en Cobertella," accessible via hiking routes.

Summer Activities
Beach and Water Sports: Enjoy the long beaches (like Platja Nova or Platja de Santa Margarida) for sunbathing, swimming, paddle surfing, kayaking, and jet skiing.

Boat Trips: Numerous catamaran and ferry tours depart from the marina, offering trips to explore the stunning Cap de Creus coastline, visit hidden coves, and often include snorkeling or a barbecue. Popular destinations include Cadaqués and the Medes Islands.

Hiking/Walking: Explore the Camí de Ronda (coastal path), which runs along the cliffs, or hike the many trails in the Cap de Creus Natural Park.

Family Fun: The town has family-friendly attractions like the Aquabrava Aquatic Park and a go-karting track.

Nightlife: The seafront promenade is lively in the summer months with bars and restaurants.

Winter/Off-Season Activities
Hiking and Cycling: The cooler months are perfect for exploring the natural parks (Cap de Creus and Aiguamolls) and hiking the coastal and megalithic routes without the summer heat.

Cultural Visits: Explore the historical sites like the Ciutadella de Roses, the Castell de la Trinitat (Trinity Castle), and the Visigothic Castrum of Puig Rom.

Wine Tourism: Roses is part of the DO Empordà Wine Route, offering visits and tastings at local wineries.

Day Trips: Its location is ideal for day trips to nearby cultural highlights, such as Figueres (home of the Dalí Theatre-Museum) and the picturesque village of Cadaqués.

Shops and Festivals
Shops: Roses offers a variety of shops, boutiques, and supermarkets, especially concentrated in the town centre. Fish lovers can explore the fishmongers clustered around the port. There is a popular market on Sunday mornings.

Festivals:

Festa Major: The main local festival is celebrated with parades, fireworks, live music, and traditions.

Gastronomic Events: The annual Ruta de les Tapas (Tapas Route), often held in spring, is a major gastronomic event where numerous bars and restaurants offer specialty tapas paired with DO Empordà wine.

Mostra del Vi DO Empordà: A wine exhibition held in April to celebrate the local Empordà wines.

World Sounds Festival: A music festival celebrated in July, often hosted in the magical setting of the Ciutadella.
