Super Besse: A modern gem in the heart of the volcanoes

Located on the southern slopes of the Puy de Sancy, Super Besse is the perfect modern mountain resort.
Set in the Auvergne-Volcanos Regional Nature Park, it offers a distinctive landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity rather than the jagged peaks of the Alps.

History and description

Founded in 1961, Super Besse was designed as a ski-in, ski-out resort to complement the medieval village of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, 7km below.
While the village is steeped in history, the resort is steeped in adrenaline. It’s the perfect place for a sun-drenched holiday, where the Alpine landscape meets a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Whether you’re looking for a winter wonderland or a summer retreat, the resort feels like a home away from home with its cosy chalets and panoramic views of Lac des Hermines.

Typical Foods: Auvergne Gastronomy

If you’re not a fan of cheese, you might have come to the wrong place. The local diet is designed to keep you warm and full of energy:

Truffade: The king of local dishes. Thinly sliced ??potato sautéed with garlic and “tome fraîche” (fresh Cantal cheese) until it becomes a springy, tasty masterpiece.

Saint-Nectaire: A creamy, nutty cheese produced right in the surrounding valley.

Petit Salé aux Lentilles: Salted pork served with the famous green lentils from nearby Le Puy.

Pounti: A traditional bread made with pork, beetroot and prunes – a sweet and tasty surprise

?? Activities: Adventures all year round

Super Besse is a rare “dual season” resort that seamlessly transitions from snow to dirt.

skiing (43 km of slopes), night skiing and Fantasticable (a giant zipline).

Summer Mountain biking (DH and Enduro), grass scootering and summer tobogganing.

Year-round Besse-Super Besse cable car to the top of Puy de Sancy (1,886 metres).

Festivals and traditions

La Dévalade (The Descent): This is the big one. On July 2nd, the statue of the Black Virgin (Notre-Dame de Vassivière) is carried from Besse up to the mountain chapel. At the end of September, she "descends" back to the village amidst a massive folk festival with fireworks and traditional music.

Saint-Cochon: A winter food festival in Besse dedicated to the pig, celebrating traditional slaughter, music and of course lots of flavours.

Nature and landscapes

The resort is a gateway to the Massif du Sancy. The landscape is defined by "Puys" (volcanic domes) and "Maars" (crater lakes).

Lac Pavin: An almost perfectly circular, bottomless lake formed by a volcanic explosion. It is eerily beautiful and surrounded by deep forest.

Puy de Sancy: The highest point in central France. On a clear day, the 360-degree view allows you to see all the way to the Alps.

Flora and fauna: Keep an eye out for marmots and mouflons (wild sheep) roaming the rocky ridges.
