Welcome to Donnersbachtal: Styria's best-kept secret

Located in the heart of the Ennstal region in Upper Styria, Donnersbachtal is a picturesque alpine valley that feels like a step back into a simpler, more tranquil time. Formed by the villages of Donnersbach and Donnersbachwald, this area is a paradise for those seeking "Sanftem Tourismus" (gentle tourism) - where nature takes center stage over flashy crowds.

A glimpse into history

The history of Donnersbachtal is deeply rooted in forestry and alpine agriculture. For centuries, the local population made a living from the timber trade and cattle breeding.

Planneralm: Historically significant as a highland grazing area, it has transformed from a rugged mountain meadow into one of the most beloved family ski resorts in the region.

Heritage preservation: You'll still see traditional "Troadkastn" (grain storage huts) dotted around the landscape, reflecting the valley's self-sufficient agricultural past.

Typical foods: A taste of Styria

Styrian cuisine is hearty, honest and incredibly flavorful. When visiting the local huts (Hütten), look out for:

Steirerkas: A crumbly, spicy mountain cheese often served on rye bread with plenty of butter.

Kärntner Nudeln: Although they originate from nearby, these stuffed pasta pockets are a staple here.

Schmarrn: Sweet, torn pancakes served with stewed plums or cranberries.

Wildschmankerl: With the lush forests, venison and chamois dishes are local specialties during hunting season.

Nature & Activities

Donnersbachtal is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts regardless of the season.

Summer: Explore over 100 km of hiking trails. A must-see is the Donnersbachklamm, a stunning gorge trail that is a certified "natural monument". For families, the Tierholzpark (wooden animal park) on the Riesneralm is a hit.

Winter: You have two different ski mountains. Riesneralm is known for its wide, sunny slopes and "first children's ski swing", while Planneralm is the highest ski village in Styria, offering 100% natural snow (no guns needed!).

Archery village: Donnersbachwald is famous for its 3D archery ranges, which attract enthusiasts from all over Europe.

Festivals and traditions

Life in the valley is governed by the seasons, and the locals love to celebrate their heritage:

Almabtrieb (Autumn): When the cattle return from the high pastures in September, they are adorned with ornate floral headdresses. It is a day of music, dancing and local schnapps.

Donnersbacher Kirtag: A traditional market with local crafts, music and plenty of Styrian hospitality.

Mountain bonfires: During the summer solstice, bonfires are lit on the mountain ridges, creating a magical ring of light around the valley.

Natural highlights

The valley is dominated by the Wölzer Tauern mountains. High-altitude lakes such as Goldbachsee offer crystal-clear water and a sense of absolute peace. The air here is exceptionally clean – Planneralm is even famous for its mountain pine oil distillery, where you can see how essential oils are extracted from the local flora to create healing remedies.
