Slovenia: An overlooked gem in the heart of Europe

Slovenia is Europe’s best-kept secret – a pocket-sized country that manages to pack alpine peaks, turquoise rivers and a Mediterranean coastline into an area smaller than New Jersey. It’s the perfect place for a holiday where you can experience “green” tourism in its purest form.

A brief history of resilience

Slovenia’s history is a tale of survival at the crossroads of cultures: Early days: Settled by Slavic tribes in the 6th century.
Habsburg rule: For centuries it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which explains the "Little Vienna" feel of the capital's architecture. Yugoslavia: After World War II, it became the most prosperous republic in socialist Yugoslavia. Independence: In 1991, Slovenia became an independent nation after a short "Ten-Day War", after which the country quickly aligned itself with the EU and became a stable, modern democracy.

Nature and landscape: The green lung of Europe

Slovenia is the only country with "love" (Slovenia) in its name, and you'll feel the special atmosphere right away.
The landscape is dominated by the dramatic Julian Alps and the emerald-green Soca River. Over 60% of the country is covered in forest. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat in the log cabins of the Logar Valley or exploring the underground wonders of Postojna Cave, nature is always the protagonist here.

Slovenian Cuisine: A Hearty Feast

Slovenian cuisine is where Alpine heartiness meets Mediterranean freshness. Here are the most iconic dishes:

Kranjska klobasa A protected pork sausage seasoned with garlic and pepper.

Potica The national dessert – a rolled pastry with, for example, walnut filling.

Štruklji Dough rolls (sweet or savory); try them with cottage cheese!

Kremna rezina The iconic vanilla cream cake from Lake Bled.

Activities and Experiences

If you’re looking for an active holiday, Slovenia is your ultimate playground: Lake Bled: Row a traditional pletna boat to the island church or hike up to the castle for “postcard” views.

White Water Rafting: Head to Bovec for adrenaline-pumping trips down the crystal-clear Soca River.

Ljubljana Walking Tour: The capital is car-free and perfect for café-hopping along the Ljubljanica River.

Hiking: Climb Mount Triglav, the highest peak and a national symbol (it's even on the country's flag!).

Festivals and Traditions

Slovenes love to celebrate their culture, often with roots in ancient folklore: Kurentovanje (Ptuj): An ancient carnival ritual to chase away winter. Men dress in massive sheepskin costumes with heavy bells to "scare" the cold away.

Ljubljana Festival: A summer-long celebration of world-class music, theater, and dance. Old Vine Festival (Maribor): Dedicated to the world's oldest living grapevine, which is over 400 years old.
