Exploring Britain

Exploring Britain is like stepping into a living museum that also happens to have excellent snacks and very unpredictable weather. Since you’re looking for a bit of everything, let’s take a proper “vacation” through the island.

A whirlwind history

Britain’s history is a cakewalk of invasions and innovations. It started with the Celts and Romans, followed by the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, until the Normans shook things up in 1066.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Industrial Revolution transformed the landscape and turned Britain into a global powerhouse. Today, it remains a unique blend of ancient monarchy and cutting-edge modern culture.

Description and “vacation” vibe

Whether you’re planning a staycation or a trip from abroad, the UK offers a varied itinerary. You can spend your holiday wandering through picturesque cobbled villages or strolling along a windswept coastline.

Whether you’re staying in a boutique hotel in London or a cosy cottage in the Cotswolds, the atmosphere is often one of “organized chaos” – steeped in tradition but always ready for a cheeky laugh in the pub. Don’t forget your umbrella; the weather is famously fickle!

Typical foods: Beyond Fish & Chips

British food has undergone a massive “resurgence” recently. While the classics are still king, the culinary scene is incredibly global.

Full English Breakfast: A “fry-up” of eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and black pudding.

Sunday Roast: Roast meat (beef, lamb or chicken) served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and gravy.

Afternoon Tea: Scones with clotted cream and jam ("cream tea"), finger sandwiches and of course a pot of Earl Grey.

Pie and Mash: A hearty main course, often served with "liqueur" (a parsley sauce).

Activities and shops

Activities: You can go hiking in the Lake District, explore the British Museum or see a West End show in London. For sports fans, a Premier League football match is a rite of passage.

Shops: For high-end luxury, head to Harrods or Liberty. For the classic British high street experience, Marks & Spencer (M&S) and Selfridges are a must-see. Don't miss the independent bookshops in towns like Hay-on-Wye.

Festivals and nature

Festivals

Glastonbury: The world's most famous music festival, held in the mud of Somerset.

Edinburgh Fringe: The largest arts and comedy festival on the planet.

Bonfire Night (November 5): Fireworks and bonfires to commemorate the Gunpowder Plot.

Nature

The UK is surprisingly green. You have the rugged Scottish Highlands, the rolling white cliffs of Dover and the mysterious Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. The national parks (like Snowdonia or the Peak District) are protected gems, perfect for a long walk.
