Germany: A Blend of Fairytale and Modernity

Germany is a blend of fairyland, exciting history and a modern, high-tech pulse. It's a place where you can wander through a medieval village in the morning and dance in a world-class techno club in the evening.

A Glimpse of History

Germany's past is a complex layer of empires and ideas. From the Holy Roman Empire to the Reformation led by Martin Luther, the country has often been the center of European thought. The 20th century brought the devastation of two world wars and the division of the country by the Berlin Wall. But the Wende (turning point/reunification) of 1990 transformed it into the democratic powerhouse it is today.

Description & "holiday" vibe

Whether you're looking for a winter wonderland or a summer getaway, Germany delivers. In the north, you’ll find the breezy, salty air of the Baltic Sea coast. In the south, the Bavarian Alps offer a scenic escape with jagged peaks and turquoise lakes. It’s a land of Gemütlichkeit – the uniquely German sense of coziness and belonging. You can spend your holiday sipping a cold lager in a sun-drenched beer garden or taking a sightseeing tour of Neuschwanstein, the castle that inspired Disney.

Typical foods

German cuisine is “soul food” at its best. It’s hearty, comforting and designed to keep you warm.

Schnitzel: Thinly sliced, breaded and fried meat (usually pork or veal).

Currywurst: Steamed, then fried sausage topped with curry ketchup – a Berlin classic.

Spätzle: Soft egg noodles, often topped with cheese (Kässpätzle).

Pretzels (Brezeln): Massive, salty, and perfect with sweet mustard.

Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte: The famous Black Forest cake with cherries and cream.

Nature and activities

Germany is surprisingly green. About a third of the country is covered in forests.

Hiking and cycling: Germans love the outdoors. The Black Forest and Saxon Switzerland National Park offer incredible trails.

Rhine Valley: Perfect for a river cruise to see vineyards and castle ruins.

Skiing: Head to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for world-class slopes.

Autobahn driving: For thrill seekers, some stretches of the highway have no speed limit (although "recommended" speeds still apply!).

Shopping and festivals

Shopping in Germany ranges from luxury to quirky flea markets.

Main Street: Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) in Berlin or Königsallee in Düsseldorf.

Souvenirs: Cuckoo clocks, Steiff teddy bears and Birkenstocks.

Oktoberfest: The world's largest beer festival in Munich (starts in September!).

Christmas Markets: Known as Weihnachtsmärkte, these pop up in every city in December, selling handmade ornaments and Glühwein (mulled wine).
